Fly Fishing Rod Angler Knowledge Base

I would like to know what a fly rod called scientific angler bought in the 1960's would be worth? It's 8' 1" . I found this fishing rod in my husbands closet after he died. It is in cloth cover and in metal tubing. It is a system 6 with a line weight of #6. It is in almost perfect condition. We had three daughter's who have no interest in fish, so I thought I would sell it, but don't know where to start.
Information on a Gunnison Oneida fly fishing rod? I picked up a Gunnison fly fishing rod that came in a aluminum canaster. The rod is marked Gunnison # 4 and also marked Tonkin Cane. On the aluminum canaster it has a label on it that says... The Gunnison Select Quality Split Bamboo. Fly casting rod # 4 . Length 9 feet and weight 5 oz. Oneida Tackle. Made in the USA. Also what looks like.. For the discriminating Angler. I am wondering if anyone might know how old this rod is and is there any value to it. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Norm
what is fly fishing?????? what is fly fishing? what is: a fly line? a leader? casting? a rod? anglers? flies? trout rivers? please include sources!
Is a 7/8 weight fly rod and reel appropriate for what I am using it for? I have been fly fishing for a little over a year now, and I bought a scientific anglers bass rod and reel. It is a 7/8 weight reel and rod. I use it on the main branch and the north branch of the ausable river in the northern part of the lower peninsula of michigan for trout fishing. I use the normal flies for that area, and normally only fish between dawn and dusk. I have been catching small to medium sized fish, and the rod casts well, and it is alright for handling fish that I am catching. I was wondering if I should buy a new rod and reel combo, with a lower weight when I can afford one (I am wanting to learn how to tie flies, and I was saving for a kit), but I am only 15, and I just started fishing. Should I get a lower weight rod, or wait?
Tips for a Novice Fly Angler? I've tried fly fishing a couple times... now I bought a rod/flies/waders/etc. All dressed up and ready to go. I'm practicing my casts in my yard right now just to get the hang of it, but I just cannot wait to go out to the Bow River and give it a whirl. So for you experienced fly fishermen out there... what kind of advice can you give a novice like me? In particular, what are some signs on the river that give clues to where the trout are, what they're feeding on, and how to catch it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Why do a lot of anglers own so many fishing rods and reels? The only factors I really consider when purchasing a fishing rod/reel is length, strength, and reel ratio. I usually get the longer fishing rods it adds more distance when I cast and as of the reel it depends on what kind of retrieve I would prefer. However, I think just any rod/reel will do A 5 foot rod can cast about 80% of a 6'6 rods distance. A 3.2 :1 versus a 5.2:1 reel would reel in about 60% as quickly as the 5.2:1. So why do experience anglers tend to have so many rods/reels in their arsenal it does the same job, except that some are a little better than others. I only 3 fishingrods and 1 fly fishing rod About the changing lures I just use a swivel. It is very efficent Hergie you are right, but whenever I look back I feel guilty that I do use them all. Came you have a good point that is way I have several rods. 1 for trout , 1 for catfish, 1 general purpose, and 1 fly rod Fun you have a good point also, but I hike a lot .Therefore I carry light mobile equipment. Usually my trips compose of 1 rod and 2 max Martin, youre right but I prefer higher ratios. It allows me to quicky reel them in but it is harder to present some lures PD if I was in a tourament of course. I would spend 500 bucks on fish equipment and bring home that 10 g purse Charles Sloan haha. I pick up that disease and paid for it. 75% of my inventory went out to family because I couldnt use them all Chimp , one of the best fishermen I knew was a very honest guy. Thanks Gold if I can truly give out more best answers I would certainly make sure you were one. I forgot about the lure size and action. You are correct abou tthe swivel and I will pay more attention to that Mike were in the same profession but have different ownership values. I just give the ones I dont use away unless there were alot of good memories. For example I lost one of my rods to a snapping turtle. I was pissed and came back the next day hopeing he might return it. Then I found a rod right next to a tree, it looks like someone left it there. I still have that rod today and slayed many catfish and trout with it Brandon, after looking at your impressive list I dont feel too bad. I dont think a lot of people can out fish you Pooh , it seems like you can fish like you have 10 arms Bobber, it looks like you can put on 12 different baits. Fish I am guessing you have many rods too. bringing different baits is always a plus Gone , that is very true. Yes I do believe our strive to improve and shopping addictions created this Fish K, you nail it right on the spot . Down to every last bit of detail. Dont worry they will come back. We just need to get more people to ask intermediate to advanced questions more. Seriously I was about to walk away from this section. I know it sounds weird but that fishing spirit always bought me back here as it did with the others. They are here. However, if it wasnt we probably wouldnt be here. It was you that was always here and for that I do thank you
Fly Fishing question? has anyone purchased the Reddington Crosswater combination or the Scientific Angler combo package 5-6 weight? What do you think of it? I want to start fly fishing but do not want to purchase a $300-$400 rig. If I enjoy it, I can always pass this rod on to my son and purchase the sage or something like that. Thanks. Also, which is better a 2 or 4 piece rod
how much or where can i figure out how much my bamboo fly rod is worth? i just got this fly rod from a estate sale alone with a bunch of other stuff, but anyway its 3pcs about three and a half feet each part, there is only one eye and its on the tip, i was told thats how they were made back in the 20's and 30's, i was watching the johnny cash movie walk the line, and when they are fishing in the begining when he was a kid its that kind of rod, its in very good condition, there is no name or part number on it, i just want to kno what its worth, i dont want to seel cuz iam a big angler, and into getting old stuff just looking for some info on it, anything would help i can get some pics of it. please someone help me!!!!! i have been looking around the web and the only thing i get is a headack.
Thoughts? oppinions? looking at setting up a new 3 wt rod with line.? Im in the process of building a new fly rod. Its a 7'6" 3 wt. Winston GVX , it is a fast action if that would help you choose one line over another. I want to keep the cost of the line less than $80 not including backing. I was thinking this line: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Lines-Backing/Lines-Backing|/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104338980/i/105553080/Scientific-Anglers-Mastery-Trout-WF-Fly-Line/744606.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fly-fishing-fly-lines-backing-lines-backing%2F_%2FN-1102366%2FNo-48%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105553080%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104721480%253Bcat104338980%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNP&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104721480%3Bcat104338980%3Bcat105553080 Comes in right around my budget but what is Scientific anglers quality like? (I dont want sharkskin line, im not impressed with it) Also do the "streamlined" loops work? I usually put the Cortland slip on leader loops that you shrink wrap to your line on my lines but this time Id like to try a "streamlined" one. And does color matter? all of my fly line is chartruese (spelling). I need thoughts about the best line for it

Please help a novice angler!? Hello from Somerset (UK)! I am a complete newbie when it comes to fishing, and I do not have any friends who fish so everything I learn is from magazines and books. I have a bare minimum of equipment which I think may be sub-standard and quite old; it has been scrounged from car boot sales and salvaged from the bargain bins of discount camping shops! Basically I want to try my hand at fishing in a stocked lake near me. I have a free day tomorrow and so I thought I might head over there with a packed lunch and enjoy the 'summer' by the lakeside. Any fish I catch would be an unexpected bonus. I'd really like to know if the kit I have is adequate and meets the requirements of the fishery. Here's a link to their website: http://www.viaductfishery.com/ I have a telescopic rod by 'Shakespeare' (about 8-9 ft) and a reel that looks very dated; it's small and is basically a narrow spool with a handle. I have several lures with three-pronged hooks, and a pre-rigged float with a small hook attached. For bait I have a can of sweetcorn. Would this be sufficient for fishing such a lake? Obviously I am not after monster carp, just smaller species that can indicate what it is actually like to fish. I'm just worried that A) my kit won't meet the fishery rules and B) everyone else there will think I'm a bit of a moron for having such basic, old kit. Here is a picture of the reel I have: http://a1bassfishinginfo.com/2009/05/fly-fishing-reels-know-your-facts/ Obviously I am a complete novice but I really just want to get going, and I can barely afford the £8 fee to get in the fishery so I'm really doing this on a super-tight budget! Do fishery staff tend to be wandering around to check kit and make sure nobody's misbehaving, or are you just left quietly to your own devices in stocked lakes? I just want some quiet time without embarrassment. Thanks!
Big-K: Special request to ALL of you in the fishing forum? Maybe I have the meaning all wrong, but... I can't help but think. Maybe, is just what we need. It will bring the forum together again, the way it used to be. Since most of the old answerers have left the forum (and I mean this in a good way, they must have had their reasons) We are a lost sub-section left behind in the shadows of this careless world of trolling fools, and other hazards. BUT many have recently returned, and while you are still here I would like to suggest something. Perhaps, we might be lost.. but not broken. (as much hate I risk getting from you guys) Even though I've been here short of even a year. I suggest a new Y-A forum tradition. For the time to bring this forum together (and after when it may get busy as hell) That there be 7 new seats of honor (This has nothing to do with those on the leader board, it has to do with everyone Here) For what I may end calling the "Guardians" of this forum. They will be elected yearly right after each "Big kahuna" Celebration. Anyone (including none T-C's in this forum) Can be voted for from all anglers that are here (expet the trolls obviously but..), but it should be considered carefully. Here are my suggested picks, and my votes for the 7 seats (if you guys do consider this new tradition). The first 3 seats will be Leaders on the board. The rest can be a mixed assortment of T-C’s and other regulars. 1) Ole fisherman: (Not sure exactly) This guy knows his stuff about northern freshwater though! 2) GMB and Enuf: are the bass kings They both know practically the same things (since GMB was after all taught by his father…) So I’m really not sure here… 3) Other regs. 4) If he should return, pheasant tail will make an exellent fly-fishing expert. And if he does not return, a person with possible equivilant of knowlage could be “Flyfisher” I’ve seen you talk about fly fishing… That is a dedicated fly-caster if I’ve ever read one. 5) Backwater Charlie: Specialist in Rod and reel reccomendations among other gear and tackle. 6) Saltwater gear expert 7) Not sure... %) And a special spot, “ Archive keeper” For chimp. Which specializes in fishing history. As well as perhaps an expert on several exotic species Just an outline! It will be better once we all figure it out. This is why I asked everyones specialty so I can map all my choices out. Because you can tell from answers… But it has to come from THEM what their specialty is. Their area. Hopefully you guys (if you the majority chooses to accept this new tradition) Can fill in the blanks for me? I feel they need 3 things to be up there 1)Has to have a specifically helpful area 2)Has to be willing to dedicate at least 2 minutes to check on questions a day 3)and has to really want this forum how it used to be! All it’s old glory restored I know its a lot of work, but big kahuna has inspired me. And I think if we have proper leadership we can all work to get this subsection to revert to how it used to be. So… Who’s in? Yeah... Yeah! A kyak spot! Boating or kyaking water vessles. Like I said, it's just an outline for now. It can be improved and I hope it can be made real Thanks Erik! B-C ... What do you mean edge? I want to see the forum how it used to be! That would be one of the best things I could see or ever hope to get from here. That would be trueley (not sarcastically) Priceless to see. Don't you think it would help at all? Or are you just saying its a bad Idea that will never worked out (and for that matter has been suggested and did not work allready)? Motocross i don't get you people... Controll what? They wouldent controll the section, they would be responsible in helping it! They are to keep this section more organized. There will be one person for a certain type of fishing. So we can keep more track of what is done. As well as kinda discussing once per months between one of the "guardians" on what progress we have made. It's not so they can boss us around like slave monkeys. It's to help this fishing section get back on it's feet. Constant lookout for the trolls. And since alot of them will have known the older anglers that left. They can ask if they will come back. And EVERYONE will ask anglers they know if they can drop by and help out too. So we have some more members. Do you understand what I mean now? Or... Despite the explanation do you still beleive it's a bad idea? I just wanna see Y-A "fishing" back to how it was. People helping each other out without the troll disturbance... bein being able to have more anglers asking questions so we can see more activity. People helping each other for the sheer will to give others knowlage! Can't you visualize that? I can! And I want to see it... At least for a time.. It's not monarchy, it's leadership. They will guide us but not bend us.And we can all contribute to try and report trolls more often. And ask yahoo about increasing their moderator defense
Hobby in the off season? Well, fishing season is over, for me anyway, and instead of having to go through fishing withdrawal I decided I want to learn a new hobby during the winter. Better than cleaning all my reels...five times over! lol. First, I want it to be fishing related and it would help if it is as addicting as fishing itself. I've thought about fly tying, but I'm not a fly fisherman. Maybe when I get into fly fishing in the future. So, I decided I want to learn to build custom rods, I think its a great hobby for ANY angler. For the freshwater, saltwater and fly guys. Making a rod that you made and one day making it so good it becomes your favorite rod to use. So my question, how do I get the blanks, wrappings, epoxy's, etc. Who sells them? Any dealers in the Northeast area (NY)? I'd like to see all the necessary items in person. Plus any information I would first need before even trying to attempt building. Anyone with experience rod building please chime in, thanks.
