- Fenwick makes a great, affordable flyrod that breaks down and they're perfect for backpacking because I'm sure your aware of all the unforseen mishaps that can occur with your gear while backpacking, and these rods are quality fishing gear at at price that wont kill you. Another good trick to know for "Quickfire casting" is to have the rod all rigged up, although broken down, you just pull the line through the rod until all the leader material is out, then spool it up and secure it in a simple fashion with some tape, then proceed to brake down the rod pulling any needed slack from the spool. Now when your hiking past that rise in the river you can have a fly over it in a matter of seconds, as opposed to minutes, which most of the time will determine whether or not you catch THAT fish. Good Luck out there !
- pfluger makes REALLY good fly fishing rods. I have an 8 foot thake down rod i use and its awesome. also try scientific anglers .
- Most modern fly rods are in a minimum of three sections but there are still plenty of rods to choose from, i have one of these, they have a good action and Ive found it good quality http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_60815_175001002_175000000_175001000_175-1-2
- Check out the blanks by Dan Craft. Most of his blanks are 5 or 6 pc. A bit of patience and a short (and fun) investment in time will allow you to have a fine casting tool that is personalized to your tastes. Keep in mind, these rod blanks were designed as 5/6/7 piece rods from the ground up. They weren't 2-pc designs that were simply given additional ferrules. Dan Craft blanks are quite nice for the price, owners rave about them, AND you can personally speak to Dan (who designs the tapers) on the phone to have him help you make the choice that's right for YOU. Do you think you can get that level of service from the other choices recommended?
