- go to your local area craigslist classified at www.craigslist.com. You should beable to find one
- for the amount of money that you mentioned, you aren't going to get much of a fly rod. especially, if you have a reel & line figured into that price
- first do you know how to use 1? it takes loads of talent
- Look at Wallmart, or any big sporting goods store, and I know you can find a fiberglass rod for less than $70. My last one that I bought for trout cost less than that, but you can also pay $500 or more. You can get by with a cheap reel if you are using it for relatively small fish, too. Cabelas at www.cabelas.com lists a Cahill fly rod and reel combo for about $50, to prove my point, so you could order from them. They have other combos,also.
- many sporting goods stores carry a fiberglass rod and reel combo by martin (I think its called caddis creek combo) for $20-30, its not bad for learning on but its really not a good casting rod but if you happen to break it your not out much. scientific angles and plfueger both have a similar packages but they are fiberglass rods as well. whats in your local stores is hard to say, if your lucky you live near a sportsmans warehouse and/or cabela's, if this is the case I would strongly recommend you go with an entry Laval graphite rod such as the redington crosswater or red fly combo or one of the cabela's house brand combos, these are much better quality than the martin, they cast well (may make it easier to learn) and are in your price range. if you don't have a cabela's and your willing to make an online purchase or you just want to do some research try looking here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/index/index-display.jsp?id=cat602038&navAction=jump&navCount=1&cmCat=MainCatcat20431&parentType=category&parentId=cat20431 and casting really isnt that difficult, a few pointers from an old hand and you'll be catching fish, the practice is fun anyway. fly fishing is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon.
- The best place to buy a fly rod is on eBay. You can purchase a complete system or rod, reel, backing, fly line, waders, flies, wading shoes, etc. Your best bet is not to get hooked on fly fishing. It is addictive and expensive.
- i'm throwin' my fly rod in the trash, i've been doing this for more than 20 years and i don't know everything, that sucks. now that i'm done ranting. wal-mart will get you started, they usually have more of a selection this time of year for fly rods, coming into spring. a #6 rod should do just about everything you want it to do. a lot of the rods at big box stores give a range rather than a single weight like #6 - #8. these rods tend to be more #8 than #6, if you can find one that says #6 or #5 that would be even better for trout and pan fish. the problem with putting a #6 line on a #8 rod is, the line won't load the rod (when the pole bends that is known as loading. this gives the line the energy needed to cast. but you knew that already, i forgot) properly and your casting will be a labor and usually short. if my memory serves me correctly i saw a #6 at wally world last spring for $39.99, rod and reel combo. thats the ticket. if you mention where you live i'm sure someone could give you more on what they have seen locally. good luck and tight lines~~~*<>{
- you will only find junk if you are looking for a complete outfit for that kind of money. Save more money and buy a real rod.
- If you want a good fly rod then you get what you pay for, i know that Shakespeare has some fly rods on offer but once again the quality isn't all there walmart has few combos on offer which would be best, i find you do get better deals on line from places like cabelas and bass pro, even if they aren't near just order on line and you will get safe a nd quick shipping, Cortland and fenwick have some reasonably priced rods but i have also found that cabelas own brand is worth the money if you don't want to pay $$$$ for sage etc http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6538101 Also look out for redington fly rodsin the sales. Also you didnt mention what size and AFTM you were thinking about, i would go for a #6wt with fast tip action.
