What is a good rod and reel setup for tarpon fishing?
I am looking to buy a rod and reel that would be good for tarpon fishing. Also, what would be good line to use, how many lb test, and what kind of leader.

- all set-ups will bring in tarpon, but the real deal is fly fishing for them. unless you will be fishing tarpon exclusively you should buy a rod and reel that you can use for your most often type of fishing. Spinning rods will cast much further if you don't fly fish. Use a 7-8 foot medium heavy one piece rod with a medium large to large reel you can use any line from 8 on up but I would use a four foot 20 pound fluorocarbon leader tied on with a surgeons knot. You can't throw heavy baits it will spook them upon entry so baitcasters are out.
- 81/2 ft. spinning rod medium heavy 20 lb.test try a spinning rod reel combo because the combo`s are specially balanced to match each other. and to cast further. Go to http://www.cabela`s.com/saltwater or http://www.basspro.com/saltwater or http:// offshoreangler.com . I would look for eighter Seaguar or Berkley 20 lb.test fluorocarbon. All the answers can be found here even how to fish tarpon.
- I totally agree with the 7' - 8' spinning setup with 20 lb. line, but I would go with a heavier flourocarbon leader and a smooth reel with as many ball bearings as you can afford.
