- Build one! It's not particularly difficult, and there are ample resources available on the internet and elsewhere. When you purchase a "low priced" (or entry level) production rod, you get a very basic fishing tool. Nothing special. Crappy cork and cheap hardware are common denominators to most such rods. The mfr, sales rep, and shop all take their cut, so compromises are made everywhere to keep the price "low." Building a rod doesn't require a heavy investment in money or time. You can purchase a great blank & good quality components for appreciably less than the low-priced, entry-level rods from the better known mfrs. You get to choose everything from the type of guides and color of wraps to the style of grip and reel seat. I wouldn't recommend purchasing a used/ebay rod unless you know what to look for or really trust the seller...for different reasons...if that's something you're considering.
- I bought a great travel 5 weight at Wal-Mart for under $100. I have several from Cabela's and Orvis that cost hundreds, and this one will catch just as many fish.
- How much do you want to spend, give us some info on prices types of rods etc, what you're fishing for etc.
- Inquire about local Fly Fishing Clubs. Many have "Garage Sale" meetings where items are available at reduced prices and in many cases are not used much as the seller just has too many rods.
- Ok then lets sort this out! one thing i will say here with fly rods quality costs. For a low price you could get a rod like a redington or fenwick, but although good rods it wont have the same casting action as say a sage TCR or a Z-axsis. You don't state what type of fly fishing you will be doing. Expect to pay about $100+ for a semi decent fly rod. Now for brands to look at. firstly i would suggest the Sage launch, its got a nice smooth action, but still has plenty of power in the blank when you need it, its also great in the lighter weights for river work. Plus its from sage which is a company renowned for quality rods, with a full lifetime guarantee. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat600591_TGP&id=0029862318396a&navCount=2&podId=0029862&parentId=cat600591&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat600591&hasJS=true Next rod worthy of a mention is this, its the orvis streamline, i cast one of these the other day and have to say found it good for the price it loaded well with a WF 5 line. http://www.orvis.com/store/product_directory_chart.asp?dir%5Fid=758&group%5Fid=759&cat%5Fid=5978&subcat%5Fid=7309 For a beginner the orvis rod, has in my opinion a better action and fittings compared to rods of a similar style and price like st croix, etc If you still want a quality rod but dont want to spend that much all i can suggest is buy used from places such as ebay.
