  1. there is no specific best length, otherwise they would sell only one size. whatever you are most comfortable with. are you looking for a fly rod? spinning rod? trolling rod? all these are going to come in different lengths. but more than likely, a spinning rod of about 6' would work fine. the others... well...you need to go to a good tackle shop and handle them.
  2. you have to put your reel on it and see how it balances out. you also need to whip it around cast a few different weights like 1/16 oz and 1/8 ounce at least. lastly you have to decide one, two or three piece rods for easy carrying in order to access way difficult areas to get to in order to fish. I had a four piece ultralight I used for packing down to the Santa Ana River below the damn at Big Bear to fish german browns and I could carry it on my back and nothing stuck out that branches and trees would have broke off.
