- Use a fly rod...they eat from the top of the water mainly.and fly line floats, along with the plug,or fly
- You don't say whether you'll be fishing in river/stream, or lake. Tactics vary. In most cases, fly rods are the way to go. But if you don't have one, then the lightest rod/reel/line combo you can get would be best. When not using a fly rod, I use a light rod with 4-6 lb test monofilament, size 12/14 hook w/ salmon egg and a small split-shot sinker about 4 ft. from the hook. Let it drift down stream, bouncing off the bottom. I let it go as far as I can and still be able to bring it back. When retrieving, the word is S L O W. This technique has worked well for me, but then maybe California trout are different (LOL). For lake fishing, I usually use Power Bait, but I'm not much into lake fishing unless I'm in a boat, then it's usually trolling deep for the big guys. Hope some others will give you tips. Good luck... have fun.
- Spinning lures work Great....Throw it in the calm deep water just after a High current section(rocky ripply section)..Trout like high oxygenation in the water. be patient and Good Luck.
- Spinning outfit will work fine - ultra light would be best. You want to use like 2 or 4 lb mono especially when it is sunny. My favorite lure is a spoon called a "Super Duper". "Rooster Tail" is also a good lure for me. You want very small lures/baits. That is one of the reasons you want light line. It easier to cast a light lure with light line. The other reason is a heavy line is more likely to spook the fish. You also what to have your line in the water at first light or as early as is legal. I have found that the first hour in the morning is the most productive. My last word of advice is to patronize a tackle shop that is local to where you are fishing. This is a great place to find out what bait is hot and what location is hot.
