How does a metal rod make a high pitched sound?

My teacher put some powder on his hands for friction to rub a metal rod, and it made a high pitched sound. Can someone explain scientifically how he did it?

  1. b/c it loses it's energy in from of sound instead of heat there is obviously some heat since it's rubbing but most of it's lost in form of sound u'll get better answers if you post this questions in physics section
