What kind of fishing rod should I buy I want a strong rod that can catch pike and trophy bass.?

I would like a medium rod I have been watching fishing shows and I want to catch a big fish and what type of lures would you recommend.

  1. Get either a GLoomis or a St Croix. For pike use big stuff like jerkbaits and big topwater baits, and you can even use crankbaits. Pike will bite anything, I have cuaght them on jigs before, but if you use big stuff it will keep other fish away. Same goes for bass.
  2. Justin that's a loaded question! First, we need to find out some more info before we can help you. #1. What's your budget for this rod? The cheapest "OK" rod would be an Ugly Stik ($39) or Berkley Lightning Rod, ($34). Ugly Stik's are near indestructible but lack sensitivity; whereas, Lightning Rods are VERY sensitive but are not as durable as a "composite-glass" rod such as a Zebco Rhino Rod or Ugly Stik. The price range for a "good" Bass/Pike rod would be (in my opinion), somewhere around $80-$100. Most rods in this price range are (in my opinion) where I would be looking. #2. Whats your budget for lures? Bass & Pike lures come in a huge variety; colors, sizes, prices. Popular Bass lures (for any size fish) are "Soft Plastic" lures (including- Worms, "Senko-type" Jerk baits, Lizards, Tubes, Curly-tailed Grubs, Etc), Spinnerbaits, Stick baits, Jigs, Topwater, Crankbaits, Jigs, Etc. A good Bass fisherman will have (at least) a few of each variety. Pike will strike many different types of Bass lures but generally like In-line Spinnerbaits, Rapala-type Stick baits, Topwater lures, and Spoons. Here's some good lures for Bass- 1.Use these in conjunction with "Owner 3/0 Offset hooks"- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_38256_100007001_100000000_100007000_100-7-1 2.
