How many fish can you catch before your rod wears down?
I have had a rod and reel for almost 10 years and it's acting really weird.

- The reel may wear out, but unless you mistreat or break it, I don't think a rod can wear out. You would have catch some serious numbers of fish to wear down a rod. Unfortunately I haven't had that problem.
- I've had reels wear out, but unless you step on, totally snap the pole itself, or break an eye on your pole... I've never heard of breaking a pole. I have had poles for over 25 years and they're still my favorites. Try replacing your reel and see how it feels.
- it could be just one fish and it would wear down but it doesnt mean you cant fix it...sometimes you get a big fish on that likes to run hard and your line can some times cut into the eyes on the rings...or your wrapings on the eyes can some times get loose after the adhesives and plastics start to crack which make the rings wobble...or the adhesives in the handle seperates and becomes loose and the handle spins freely or is just moves...its common for these things to happen....but its due to age....
- Actually the rod can only be as good as the person using it Ill bet your the kind of person that goes out and puts the end in the water and stuff. I'll bet more times than not you go out and get skunked. Try watching some of the older, really experienced fishermen, then you might learn something. don't just go out and be a jackass with your equipment. And don't ask a bunch of moronic questions like "Hey Mister, did ya catch any?" like a duh! Yes your rod might be wore down but not as much as everyone elses patients......
- yeah. that happens to me too. you gotta get the guides rotated and change the graphite every few thousand fish.
- An unlimited amount if you have good quality eyes on it. On some of the cheaper rods the string will cut grooves in the eyelet's creating a problem with cutting the line. What usually gets the rod unusable is doing what I did last weekend. With the most expensive rod I ever bought, and wasn't a year old, I accidentally stepped on it and broke it last weekend. If you like the rod you can just replace the eyelets on it when they get a groove cut into them.
- I have had reels go to heck,But rods especialy if you buy quality ones. Should last longer than 10 years. Mine do anyhow.
- I answered a similar question about rods a while back here is the answer I gave It depends on how often they are used and how well you take care of them. if you are a recreational angler who just fishes once a month or so, you should get decades of use. If you are like me and fish all the time in tournaments day in and day out, bad weather, banging them around on a casting deck, maybe a few years. I have about 12 rods that I use regularly and I break about 2 a year. Last year I broke one while setting a hook and another by stepping on it. As far as reels go it's pretty much the same story, I break (or have one malfunction) usually one reel a year. Alot of it depends on how well you clean and oil and take care of it.
