How to deal with rust on a rotisserie rod and vegetable basket?

Any ideas of what I can do to salvage an expensive rotisserie rod and veg basket that was left out in the damp? Thank you. If you know, please include what I should do once the rust is off - do I need to treat the metal somehow?

1. go over them with a brillo pad it will remove the rust
2. Steel wool to remove rust then coat with vegatable oil.
