Can I use a freshwater fishing rod for saltwater?
I bought a Shakespeare Uglystik SPL 1102, and i figured out that it was a freshwater rod (im a saltwater fisher). im still a begginer (i only fish from the pier) but im still worried that there will be some negative consequences for using a freshwater rod in saltwater. will it be ok?

- it depends what your fishing for . if you are going for a big fish then you might want to go to dicks sporting goods and find a new one.
- Everything will be fine. Just be sure to rinse the reel under fresh water after fishing. This will clean away any salt residue that can damage the reel.
- You can if you like too. Good luck to you o.k.
- Yes, as far as i know, the only difference between a fresh and saltwater rod is that a saltwater one is made of materials that are resistant to salt, and salt does not hurt the materials. Don't worry, you're Ugly Stik's tough he will handle it.
- Yeah, everything's cool, yo. Its not like you'll be catching any big halibut or rays off the pier. The light rod won't break with a 3 1/2 ounce sinker either.
- no. a freshwater reel will not work correctly in saltwater
- the rod will be fine...it's the reel you need to watch out for...you can either rinse the reel off or get a corrision resistant salt water reel...
- The rod you have chose is fine, the reel if was designed for fresh water may be a problem. If you rinse the reel out in a bucket of fresh water you may get two seasons out of it. You can never get all the salt residue out out of the reel so eventually it will be trashed. You may want to decide to purchase a reel made for salt water use,{stainless & costing more}, or replacing a fresh water model every couple of years. Good luck fishing!
- When I go to the pier I see old oriental people using Sponge Bob rods! (LOL) The point? As long as you wash it off thoroughly after any fishing trips any Ugly Stik will last a long time.
- Hell yeah! I used to use my heavier F/W bass outfits on the beach all the time! Nothing like seeing my 8 1/2" Flippin' Stick (not Ugly Stik) fight a big ray or skate in the surf on #15 line!
- Good to go. Depends on what's biting. Often use my light freshwater gear from a pier. Might break your line once in a while on bigger saltwater fish but it's a lot of fun. Baitfish feel like tuna. Hooked a small striper w/ 6lb test line on a 5-1/2' rod & laughed like a loon for over 5 minutes till he ran under the pier. No negatives & will actually help you learn how to play a fish that is putting up a fight. Edit: As mentioned rinse off everything w/ fresh water ,even saltwater gear. Best regards
