What type of fishing rod should I buy?

I want to take up fishing as I live close to a river, I know how to fish as I learned when I was younger. My problem is that I have no idea what type of rod to buy. The rules on fishing in this river say no spinning, bait fishing only and no floats. This river has Salmon, Perch, and Pike. I have no idea if that helps but I'll tell you anyway. I had no idea how many types of rods there were and I need some help. Thanks In Advance, JD

  1. If you are not allowed floats the I would buy a legering rod. If you fish for salmon you will need a different rod licence than you need for general course fishing
  2. You can't go wrong with an "Ugly Stick". that a spin cast reel and six pound monofiliment. You will have a rod that can handle almost anything with light tackle to make everything a good run.
  3. a good one
  4. Is the river current strong, if so, go with something sturdy, not one that has a lot of bend in it. Can't go wrong with the Shakespear Ugly Stick.
  5. ugly stick , bass pro shops
  6. you should look in the tackle section of a good fishing magazine. you can get good quality all round match/float/feeder/carp rods from a tenner.. if you decide you enjoy the sport you can choose to buy more specialised gear. if its not for you you've got one for anytime for only a small layout.. tight lines...
  7. i would say any brand of rod that is above 60 dollars. your choice really pick a rod that best fits you. just go to a rod shop and check them out. fellow fisherman =)
  8. Your best bet, is to go to a fishing place or at least a place that has a fishing section in it, and ask someone who can show you the difference in the poles, the baits and everything else you need to know about fishing on your river or in the surrounding area, everyone on here can only give you limited advice but i think having someone standing beside you to show you whats what would benefit you the most. You're lucky i've always wanted to fish for some Salmon. Goodluck fishin. sorry i could be more help
  9. For pike and salmon, i would go with a 7' MH action trigger rod, with a baitcasting reel filled with a quality 15 lb. mono. For perch, i would use a 5'6 light action spinning rod, with a spinning reel filled with 6 lb. mono. Happy fishing.
  10. I'm going to start out saying, what do people always include so many different fish when asking a question. Like "What is the best rod for catfish, carp and bluegill?" Bluegill are a totally different sized fish! Just like the perch you mentioned. For the Salmon and pike, they are closely sized. For salmon & pike, i would use a 6'6 or 7' M-H action Shakespeare Ugly Stik trigger rod : http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_21815____SearchResults?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail and for the reel, i would have a Bass Pro Shops Megacast Metal round baitcaster : http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44657_100001001_100000000_100001000_CROSSSELL_PRODUCT?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail For the perch, i would get one of these Bill Dance 11T Gold Triggerspin combos : http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_51509____SearchResults
  11. hey man, i am not to familiar with a place that you can not use a spinner reel. if i understood you correctly you are not left with a whole lot beside a cane pole. i want to go fish there, seems like there wouldn't be a whole lot of pressure on the fish, makes a person result to the bair necessities.if you were talking about spinning as in no spinner baits then i would have to agree with most of the peoples answers above mine. the shakespear ugly stick is pretty much the best all around fishing rod for all kinds of fish. now what strength you are needing is all depending on the size of fish that you are wanting to target. the best all around size would be the medium action rod. i wish i could be of more help but this one got me. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience
