spinning rod technique question?

my friend taught me how to use a spin cast rod, but idk if hes right or not. he told me to move the bail over to the rod and hold the line against the rod with one finger then with the other hand open the bail, then you cast it, then when it hits the water, then reel it in and dont close the bail because it will flip over for you. my line keeps getting tangled up
