How to fix detached lift rod in bathroom sink?

The lift rod on my bathroom sink doesn't pull the sink stopper down into the drain when I lift it up. In fact I can pull the lift rod right out. How do I get it reattached to the sink stopper so that it works properly?

1. it attaches under neath the sink on the back side [where the water lines come in] there should be a clip that holds the rod to the lever
