How to remove OIL from a fly rod cork grip?

I have managed to get reel grease on my z-axis cork grip, any suggestions for ways to REMOVE the oil, ive tried a few methods but don't intend to ruin the cork. Any suggestions on what to use to remove it????

  1. Denatured alcohol applied with a cloth should clean up the surface oil. Powdered Ajax or Comet applied to barely dampened cork does an exceptional job of removing oil residues and stains. None of the above will harm the cork or the adhesive used in the grip construction. Acetone would be another option when used lightly, but its use around epoxy finishes could mean more harm than help. Cheers!
  2. can't say I've ever had that problem. the first thing I'd try is wrapping the cork tightly with paper towels using rubber bands to keep them in place and let it sit in the sun to heat up (oil thins and runs when hot). after that I'd grind up some kitty litter (finer means more surface area to suck up the oil) or get some oil-sorb (or similar product), use masking tape to try and seal up the reel seat. I'd use a bucket, fill it up just deep enough and bury the the grip and once again let it sit out in the sun for a day or two. that should take care of most of the oil and be use able again after you blow the kitty litter off. if it's just a little spot I'd try some spot cleaning with a gentle degreaser like some dawn dish washing detergent mixed in a sink as if you were washing dishes, after that I'd try rubbing alcohol. I consider it but be hesitant to try something stronger like goo gone. good luck, nice rod.
  3. mild soap and water. don't use any solvents. of anyone here, you know better than that. cork is fairly water resistant. the stain most likely does not go too deep. l think you can see what l may be suggesting but l don't want to be the one to say 600 grit s*******r. l'd try a toothbrush and maybe toothpaste before going too far.
  4. I'd say put up the Z-Axis on e-bay and get a ZG Helios to replace it (LOL) but what I would do is use Simple Green - full stregnth put it in a spray bottle and spritz the area, then use a soft nylon brush, spritz again, repeat process until grease is gone. Then rinse under water and blot dry. BTW - some of the other suggestions sound as if they would work also.
  5. I would go w/ soap and water 1st before spraying a bunch of goo on my poles. This has always been the recommended way to clean cork.
