Which Fly rod/ line weight Should I use?

I am just a beginner at Fly fishing, and a little bit confused about which size of rod and line weight I should use. Is there a general purpose combination, Also what size of fly should you use on the chosen line. I would be fishing on small to medium rivers, occasionally a loch. Thank you.

  1. If your fishing small to medium rivers i would suggest a 4wt, however, without me actually seeing the water your fishing i cant be exact on the rod you need-if your fishing heavy nymphs or in a windy location then a 5wt might suit your fishing style better. For loch fishing you will need a different rod-if its not a stocked loch and is filled with smaller wild browns a 6wt will be fine-providing your fishing teams of wet flies(usually the best loch method, flies like the Bibio, silver invicter, olive bumble etc). If its a stocked loch with rainbows etc then a 7/8wt would suit your fishing better-on larger lochs a 10ft rod would be best as it helps with heavy lines and in windy conditions. You also need to take into account tree cover when fishing rivers-although a longer rod will help with casting will it get caught up in the overhanging trees your fishing.
  2. I use a 5 weight for pan fish if that helps.
  3. i would suggest a 7 weight rod and line. perfect for lochs if you use a heavier fly and perfect for rivers also with smaller nymphs and dries etc. if you are just starting out i would suggest the diawa trueflight rod with a scientific angler 7# line. still to this day do i use this combo and it still does the trick. perfect for casting in awkward south easterly winds and has a good tip for avoiding those trees. i would also suggest the vision koma reel. it truely is a cracking reel. the rod costs £50 the reel costs £60 and the line in only £20. its totally worth it though as this combo covers most situations. best of luck m8 and hope u get as hooked on fishing as i am! tight lines.
