What exactly is a cylinder rod and what does it do?

So I just had a new clutch put in and at first it was very hard to shift from gear to gear but after 2 weeks or so it has become easier. The only problem now is that I can barely shift into reverse. I went back to the mechanic and he said that all I had to do is replace the cylinder rod and it will be much easier. Any Ideas?

  1. hes talking about the clutch master cylinder. the rod of the master cylinder is connected directly to the top of the clutch pedal. when you push in the clutch pedal, it moves a rod into a cylinder, which pushes the clutch fluid and regulates how the clutch disc moves towards or away from the flywheel. its about $90 max for the master and about $150 max for the install
  2. The clutch cylinder would be a piston that pushes the clutch plates together (like an air pump for bike tires), the rod would be the center piece.
