What are the long term effects of a broken arm having a steel rod put in?

My stepson broke his arm while we were out of town and he was with his mother. He had a clean break on the small bone in his right arm. She told us they had to put a rod in his arm, and that he would have to have surgery again, but that is all she knows. Can anyone tell me what the second surgery may be and what the rod is doing in there in the first place? Thanks!

1. I would imagine the rod was put in place to help support the bone while it healed and a second surgery would be to remove the rod so that his arm will grow properly after the bone has healed most likely about 6-8 months after the initial surgery.
