What would be the difference between using a 10' fly rod over a 9' rod?

Curious about what the differences in fishing would be between using a 10' to a 9' rod?

  1. The difference is about 12 inches
  2. Rod length and usability depends on the application. When I fish from a float tube, a longer rod can be nicer because you are seated so low to the water - the longer rod helps keep the line higher in the air and not touch the water behind you. Also, in general, a longer rod will help you cast further because you have greater speed at the tip. When wading small streams like a shorter 7' rod because I don't need to cast for distance, and I get tangled up in overhead branches much less. Usually (but not always) a longer rod uses a heavier line - which can be easier to cast heavier flies, but can get tiring more quickly. The differences between 9' and 10' would be slight, but noticeable depending on the application. For instance, it would be more noticeable in a float tube than standing.
  3. Surprisingly there are some big differences. With the 10 foot rod: 1) you'll be able to cast farther 2) When fishing nymphs, you'll get a much longer drift and be able to mend line easier 3) You'll be able to handle larger fish more easily Of course the 9 foot rod is easier to handle and will fit into tighter places
  4. Advantage: easier to fling the line farther Disadvantage: tougher to handle, not as accurate
  5. Here is a few things that are great for the 10 foot rod,and disadvantages I really don't know of any that I can think of.And as far as 10 foot rod not being as accurate as a 9 foot rod I don't see or know of anything that backs that notion up. 1,With a 10 foot rod you can cover more water. 2,You can do better in a float tube roll casting, and just able to get your line out a little father than with the 9 foot rod. 3,You can roll cast and get more distance when you are around bushes and other obstructions that are behind you.
