- I've been fly fishing for 25 years and have never heard of a practice rod. If you have high enough ceilings, just use your real setup. The first casting seminar was held in a school gym. We used the real ones and within about ten minutes were casting all the 90' line out. If you want a good place to practice, your lawn makes a great place provided it's not full of dog crap. One instructor I had early on would recommend the lawn. Just clean your line afterwords.
- Lee & Joan Wulff came up with an indoor practice rod called the Fly-O that is still available through Royal Wulff Products. I first started suggesting this rod to some of my casting students about 20 years ago and always found it beneficial to them. Royal Wulff has it available here: http://www.royalwulff.com/educational.html#fly-o Building your own with half a rod isn't as simple as it might appear. The Wulff's put quite a bit of research in this practice rod in order to get the action that would most replicate a full size rod, including the weight of the yarn and the size of the guides. John Wulff is without a doubt one of the top fly casting instructors in the world who sits on the board of several fishing & fly fishing organizations. She has held world records in casting. Her casting DVD and books are excellent aids also.
- practice? practice outside in the spring with a regular rod. fly rods are about 9 feet long so any indoor rod isnt gonna help you fish unless you have a REAL big house and can use a regular rod
- The simplest and most cost effective way of doing this is to use about half of your rod tip end 1 peice tip section or 2 peices if a 4 peice rod then you tie some wool to the tip eye and cut it about a foot longer than your tip section "play around with the length a bit" . Now use the same casting action as you would with your full outfit and you will be casting tight loops in no time this can be practiced anytime. Hope this helps
