How do I use the fishing rod on Harvest Moon for DS?

I'm not sure if this is a glitch in my game or I'm doing it wrong but I can't seem to catch anything with my fishing rod. The bobber sits there and nothing happens, am I supposed to be wearing my touch gloves?

1. Did you wait till your character starts tugging and the bobber goes down?
2. Watch you character closely. When an exclamation point [!] appears above his head, press X to try to reel in a fish. Sometimes it takes HOURS to get the point to show up, but fortunately you don't have to actually catch something to level the rod, just use the it. The majority of your fishing needs to be through the harvest sprites. You can get the first fishing sprite by casting into the water hole on your farm. (And the next couple by casting into the hot springs when you unlock them.) Also fish the sprites catch count towards the HUGE number of fish you have to catch to unlock more fishing sprites. As long as you catch the one after you've meet the prerequisite you'll unlock the sprite.
