What is the rod thing on front bumper corner on a mitsubishi chariot/spacewagon ?

On the mitsubishi chariot/spacewagon, near side corner bumper there is a retractable rod controled by a swith on dash as "pole". What is this and what does it do ?

1. It is for bicyclers that get in the way. Simply flip the switch swerve over a little. The bar is designed to hit the in the rear of the leg and get them off the road - and into the trails where they belong
2. this is your parking director - if it hits the curb/tree/someone ---- you are too close.
3. That'd be on an import. It's supposed to help you line up with the kerb.
